Apex court sets 6-hr deadline for Mayawati

"You have time till 7 this evening to clear out all workers," is the apex court's stern deadline to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati to stop all work at her memorials that are being constructed.

Taking serious note of the violation of its order, the apex court said "nobody should be allowed to enter these sites except the guards".

The Supreme Court called it a serious matter and said if the facts stated in newspapers and television channels are correct, then the UP government is trying to play with fire; it is playing hide and seek.

The UP government had told the court that only maintenance work is being carried out at the sites, but the apex court said, "We fear that under the pretext of maintenance, the court order is brazenly violated."

Nothing wrong with Gujarat affidavit: Chidambaram

The minister said the affidavit was only meant to be an intelligence input, not conclusive proof of guilt, much less a reason for killing anyone in cold blood.

"What is wrong with the affidavit? To the best of my knowledge the affidavit says that intelligence inputs were shared with the Gujarat government. That affidavit must be read in context. You cannot read into it what it does not say. I think it is self-evident that intelligence inputs are not evidence, much less conclusive proof. They are just inputs. They are hared with governments on a regular basis. That is not evidence or conclusive proof. It gives leads to investigations further enquiry. If a state government acts as though intelligence inputs are evidence or conclusive proof, I am sorry for that government.
